Octoburn Vehicle Guidelines
Updated for Octoburn 2026
Burn2 in October: Start your Engines!
Create art cars and vehicles for 2026 Octoburn! But wait! Before you rev up, it is important to read and be fully informed on what art cars at Burn2 are about, and what the rules and guidelines are for bringing yours to Burn2's Octoburn event.
The following information is specifically for art car and vehicle creators and explains some of the options and limitations.
Types of Vehicles
* Art Cars *
Participants may create their own art car to drive around at the event, subject to some rules and limits. DMV will provide a separate NC with details coming soon. Art cars are treated the same way as cars in the RL Burning Man -- requiring inspection, speed limits, and other requirements. All art cars at the event must use the vehicle scripts provided by DMV. No external scripts! This is due to excessive lag and sim crashing from past use of ACS and other external scripts. There are also limitations on vehicle size, number and type of scripts in Contents, and other visual guidelines. DMV will provide guidelines and will have a series of workshops during the Octoburn build period to support art car building.
Participants who plan to re-use vehicles from previous Octoburns will need to update to the latest DMV script. The latest scripts (v2.2) reduce memory by 40% compared to the previous versions and will help improve sim crossings and overall sim stability. This update typically involves simple swapping out some scripts in the Contents. If you used a Config NC for your settings, you won't need to hand-edit anything.
Gifting art cars during the event will not be possible because every individual car requires an inspection prior to building close.
Participants will not be able to use their own rezzers to gift art car copies for others to ride. There are too many security problems associated with this. The only exception to this is bicycle rezzers, subject to some limitations and pre-approval before build close (details below).
Wearable cars or motorcycles must not alter the avatar's default walk and run speeds, and must follow the same size and visual guidelines as other art cars.
* Bicycles *
We encourage bicycles at Octoburn! Some bicycle givers will be available in various locations. If you are making your own bikes, the following guidelines will apply:
- Wearable bikes are preferred because they do not contribute to region LI and create less lag than vehicle-scripted bikes. Wearable bikes must not alter the default walking and running speeds, and must follow the same guidelines as plot builds - no excessive scripts, particles, etc.
- If you plan to create bikes that use a vehicle script they must use the DMV scripts with the same speed limitations as art cars
- if you plan to use a rezzer to offer bikes for participants to ride, the rezzer script must be reviewed by staff to confirm it will not allow bad actors to abuse it, for example, clicking the rezzer repeatedly to rez many bikes. Rezzers that have not been reviewed and approved by staff will be returned.
* Flying Vehicles *
Participant-built flying vehicles have never been allowed at Octoburn. There will be an airport with a small number of pre-approved planes to take participants sightseeing above the event and possibly to skydive. There is also a pre-approved balloon tour near the entrance gate. But with these exceptions, no other flying vehicles by participants will be allowed.
* Vehicles Remaining at Plots *
All vehicles parked at an art plot will count toward the total LI of the plot.
Vehicles that do not contain vehicle scripts, and are not for driving around, do not require any inspection or approval beyond what is required for plot builds.
If you are planning to use drivable vehicles in your plot, which do not leave the plot, the vehicles must use an approved DMV script and and there must be a wall to prevent the vehicles from being driven out of the parcel. We require the DMV script to prevent excessive lag that can affect artwork in other plots that share the sim.
** If you are already getting a head-start on new art cars **
- Please use the latest car scripts, v2.2, available in DMV garage and sandbox
- The only change from previous years, besides the script version, is that cars will be checked that they can easily be seen in midnight EEP/windlight.
- There will be new versions of the Inspection Tag and Auto-Park script. Please delete any old versions, they won't work this year.
These guidelines have been confirmed by the event leads group, and will be enforced by rangers during the event.
Details on art car building requirements and workshops will be coming very soon.
DMV is looking for experienced builders/scripters to volunteer with DMV!
