Updated for Octoburn 2026
Burn2 in October: Start your Engines!
Create art cars and vehicles for 2026 Octoburn! But wait! Before you rev up, it is important to read and be fully informed on what art cars at Burn2 are about, and what the rules and guidelines are for bringing yours to Burn2's Octoburn event.
The following information is specifically for art car and vehicle creators and explains some of the options and limitations.
* BEFORE AND AFTER THE EVENT *
Vehicles used for driving in and out of the regions, before and after the event, to simulate the travel experience, do not need to have any special requirements other than being visually realistic and reasonable land impact (LI).
We will announce an Arrival Caravan fun-event during the build weeks. During the Arrival Caravan we simulate the experience of waiting in line, being greeted by the greeters, and driving all our gear to our camp. You don't need to attend the Arrival Caravan to experience your drive-in, however, it is optional.
As with Burning Man, once you reach your camp or plot, please park the vehicle (or delete it) and do not drive around further. Drivable vehicles parked at plots must be locked, so that others cannot drive them away.
* BUILDING ART CARS *
During the event, only DMV inspected and approved Art Cars may be driven around, as with the real-life Burning Man.
Participants may create their own art car to drive during the event. These must pass a DMV inspection prior to build close. Art cars at the event must follow a number of technical guidelines which are listed in a separate document. These include limitations on vehicle size, LI impact, speed, and other visual guidelines.
One of the primary requirements for art cars is that they use only the vehicle scripts provided by DMV. No external scripts! This is due to excessive lag and sim crashing from past use of ACS and other external scripts. Sims full of avatars and scripted art are very sensitive to vehicle script impact, and this is the main reason we restrict the scripts during the event.
Art cars that received an inspection tag must remain rezzed; Taking them to inventory and rezzing then back out will nullify the inspection tag and require re-inspection.
* RE-USING ART CARS FROM PAST EVENTS *
Art cars that passed vehicle inspection at past years, will need to make some very minor changes.
- - Please update to the latest DMV script (v2.2) - if you have not already. This reduces memory by 40% compared to the previous versions and will help improve sim crossings and overall sim stability. The update typically involves simple swapping out of some scripts in the vehicle Contents. If you used a Config NC for your settings, you won't need to hand-edit anything.
- - During DMV inspection, cars will be checked that they can easily be seen in midnight EEP/windlight. if your vehicle is not visible in dark environments you will need to add lighting.
- - DMV will provide new versions of the Inspection Tag and Auto-Park script. Please delete any old versions, they won't work this year.
* GIFTING ART CARS *
Gifting art cars during the event will not be possible because every individual car requires an inspection prior to building close.
Participants will not be able to use their own rezzers to gift art car copies for others to ride. There are too many security problems associated with this. The only exception to this is bicycle rezzers, subject to some limitations and pre-approval before build close (details below).
* WEARABLE CARS AND MOTORCYCLES *
Wearable cars or motorcycles must not alter the avatar's default walk and run speeds, and must follow the same size and visual guidelines as other art cars.
* BICYCLES *
Some bicycle givers will be available in various locations as part of event infrastructure. If you are making your own bikes, the following guidelines will apply:
- Wearable bikes are preferred because they do not contribute to region LI and create less lag than vehicle-scripted bikes. Wearable bikes must not alter the default walking and running speeds, and must follow the same guidelines as art cars - no excessive scripts, particles, etc.
- - If you plan to create bikes that use a vehicle script they must use the DMV scripts with the same speed limitations as art cars.
- - if you plan to use a rezzer to offer bikes for participants to ride, the rezzer script must be reviewed by staff to confirm it will not allow bad actors to abuse it, for example, clicking the rezzer repeatedly to rez many bikes. Rezzers that have not been reviewed and approved by staff will be returned.
* FLYING VEHICLES *
Participant-built flying vehicles have never been allowed at Octoburn. Rezzers that offer vehicles to fly are also not allowed.
There will be an airport with a small number of pre-approved planes to take participants sightseeing above the event and possibly to skydive. There is also a pre-approved balloon tour near the entrance gate. With these exceptions, no other flying vehicles by participants will be permitted.
* VEHICLES REMAINING AT PLOTS *
All vehicles parked at an art plot will count toward the total LI of the plot.
Vehicles that do not contain vehicle scripts, and are not for driving around, do not require any inspection or approval beyond what is required for plot builds.
If you are planning to use drivable vehicles in your plot, which do not leave the plot, the vehicles must use an approved DMV script and there must be a wall to prevent the vehicles from being driven out of the parcel.
Vehicles that are parked but not planned to be used during the event, must be locked so they cannot be driven away by others.
Art Car requirements will be enforced by Rangers during the event.
DMV will offer a series of workshops during the Octoburn build period on various art car topics. Watch the Burn2 group notices for announcements.
