Conception 2018 – Prometheus’ Gift Build Guidelines

Conception is BURN2’s celebration of the start of things, the origins of our Regional among them. We talk of beginnings, awakenings, and enlightenments.

This year’s Conception theme centers around the origins of fire, the ancient stories our forebears told each other about how mankind came to have and control fire. “Prometheus’ Gift” is not so much about Prometheus as it is about the gift. Read more here: /theme-prometheusgift

We hope this fires up your imaginations and gets you cooking up your own creative, fantastical stories. Build your own version of a myth of fire coming into the hands of humanity!

Don’t let “I don’t know how to make anything” stop you from learning! We encourage participation! We will have building basics classes to get you started. Bring your idea and before you know it, you’ll be creating something magical and all your own on a plot at this event. Novice builders can take advantage of our building classes that are always free, given by volunteers in the spirit of the Gifting principle. Please ask about our building workshops. “There are no bystanders, we are all participants”.

Established and new, up-and-coming artists are also enthusiastically invited to come and place their creations on the dusty Deep Hole playa.

Each builder is part of and responsible to the community and fellow participants, to build in a manner that does not adversely affect others. In keeping with the spirit of BURN2 and Burning Man, please avoid inflammatory content or behaviour.

Along with the theme vision, PLEASE read and follow the 10 Principles of Burning Man. You can find them here: http://burn2.org/about/the-ten-principles.

In a diverse, creative community like ours, there needs to be some rules to help things run as safely, smoothly, and fairly as possible for all participants.

RULES VS. GUIDELINES

What is the difference between rules and guidelines? Rules are limitations to which everyone must adhere. While in world, we are all subject to the Second Life(tm) Terms of Service and Community Standards, and when on the Deep Hole sim, we must also adhere to expectations as befitting a Mature rated sim.

Guidelines, however, are suggestions. They are not rules, but if everyone follows them, it will enhance the look and feel of the event.

If you have any questions about the rules or guidelines, ask! The event lead or artist/builder lead will be happy to explain.

We strive to keep lag to a minimum where we can, and to provide an enjoyable and distinctively BURN-y experience for everyone. For that reason we ask all creatives to respect the following rules:

RULES

1) There is a choice of two sizes of plots for this event:
– 16x16m (256sqm) 20m max height
– 16x32m (512sqm) 25m max height
Parcels will be created for each plot, with the accompanying Land Impact limits.
ALL parts of your build should be inside the boundaries of your plot.
Objects that overhang or are outside of your plot boundary (“MOOP”, or “Matter out of Place”) may be returned to you (we will try to contact you first). If you have doubts or questions, talk with the event, artist or placement lead.

2) Prims larger than the assigned parcel size are not permitted. Height maximums are given in guideline #1 above.

3) Mesh is allowed, but please use it sparingly, and make it low poly/low LI where possible. Be aware that not everyone uses a viewer which enables them to see Mesh.

4) No Temp-on-Rez objects.

5) Please keep texture sizes as low as possible (512×512 or its equivalent) and reuse textures when possible – this makes your build rez quicker and “pop” for visitors.

6) Do not use ANY scripts that require interacting with the region server or external servers/databases, such as scanners, visitor logs, etc.
For other scripts, keep script times to .02ms or less, if possible.

7) Minimize the use of physical objects. If you are not sure, you can always ask the event, artist or placement lead for guidance.

8) Make prims phantom wherever you can. One exception would be an object that needs to be walked on, like a floor.

9) Use glow sparingly. The effects of glow multiply in an area, so if few sources, a maximum of 0.5; if a lot, a total maximum of 0.2.

10) NO commercial or promotional items.
You cannot advertise your group, store, or charitable cause, nor can you give out any advertisements or landmarks or SLurls to your store, venue or charitable event. No selling permitted, period.

11) Build deadline is 11pm SLT on Wednesday, 27 June 2018. This gives us one day to check all builds and have any needed changes or adjustments made on Thursday. We will open Friday the 29th of June.

12) After the event is over, we observe “Leave No Trace”, when all must be cleared from the playa. This deadline is 11:00 PM (23.00) SLT on Friday, 6 July 2018. It is the responsibility of the builder to completely take up their build. Please do not leave it for us to return your items! We REALLY HATE having to throw your builds in ugly piles into your Lost & Found Folders.

NO 11th HOUR BUILDING, PLEASE!!
We are a community. Building alongside each other during the build period is a great way to make new friends!

If your creative vision does not quite fit in with all that is outlined, please call on the Artist/Builder Lead or Event Lead to discuss ways this may be achieved.

Playa Aesthetics (the beauty and inspiration):

BURN2 is a virtual continuation of Burning Man, an event that happens yearly in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert on an ancient, dry lake bed. This “playa”, as it is called, is ringed by distant mountains and supports no animal, insect, or plant life. It is very windy, very dusty, very dry, and very inhospitable. Storms can appear suddenly and out of nowhere. EVERYTHING is trucked in or brought in from hundreds–or even thousands–of miles away. And, when the event is over, EVERYTHING is picked up, and the playa is returned to its natural state as if nothing ever happened. Not a single sequin or twist tie remains.

In an effort to challenge your creativity, we ask you to consider the above aesthetics and follow these…

GUIDELINES

Don’t dig up the playa, create mounds of playa, or otherwise harm it environmentally.

All fires are on burn stands, burn barrels, or somehow contained to not leave burn scars.

Builds are made of lightweight materials that can be trucked in. Sometimes, they may require many trucks and/or cargo containers, but everything is still trucked in.

The Black Rock Desert gets magnificent dust storms, lasting hours, or even sometimes days. Build things that won’t get caught by a windstorm and blown away. Use rebar and rope and tie things down securely.

Tents, shade, sail cloths, poles, scaffolding, portapotties, temp sheds, trailers, Quonset huts, geodesic domes, motorhomes, rental trucks (no actual, real logos – but you can parody the logos for humor), bikes, or other temporary structures come down quickly and leave no trace.

The Black Rock Desert is a hostile, barren environment that won’t support grass, lawns, forests, or gardens. Instead, use fake turf and potted trees, or other items that are designed to look manufactured, rather than lifelike.

If in doubt about anything, ask. BURN2 staff may also have textures, building ideas, and other resources available. They are here to help!

Please request assistance in BURN2 Access group chat if you have any questions or need further information or clarification.
