Burn2 Octoburn
October 17-26, 2025
Tomorrow Today
The Department of Mutant Vehicles (DMV) provides art cars for attendees to use and enjoy, as well as guidelines, support and workshops for bringing your own art car to Octoburn.
** Rezzer Cars **
A collection of over 60 art cars are available for driving during the event. These have been donated by past and present builders. Art car rezzer kiosks are placed throughout the event. Attendees can view a slide show of art cars from the kiosk and click it to rez their own copy to drive. Vehicles from the rezzer are Temp-rezzed and disappear upon standing, but you can always rez another from a nearby kiosk.
** Large Art Car Fleet **
In addition, a fleet of large art cars will also be making the rounds. These typically hold 12 or more. Participants can jump on and ride as they are being driven around. The large art cars can be driven by anyone in the Access group! They are are parked in the DMV sandbox when not in use. If you want to create your own large art car to use at the event, please see details below and contact the DMV Lead.
** Wearable Vehicles **
Small wearable vehicles such as bicycles are encouraged! Anyone may use a wearable vehicle, provided that the speed of walking and running remain the defaults (no speed enhancers). Wearables are a great option for small, 1-person vehicles that go walking and running speeds, Some camps give away wearable bikes or vehicles as gifts.
** Driving Your Own Art Car at Octoburn 2025 **
Plot owners may also use their own art private cars to drive around during the event, with some restrictions:
- Art car owners must have an assigned plot. Vehicle must be garaged at the owner's plot when not in use
- Car LI counts toward total LI on plot
- The car must use the unaltered DMV car scripts which are provided in . Configuration must be set to walking and running speeds only (gear 1 and 2)
- No ordinary-looking vehicles. Art cars must show Radical Self-Expression and Radical Lighting (visible during midnight windlight)
- No flying vehicles or Marketplace vehicles, unless re-scripted with the DMV car scripts
- Vehicle must be small enough to fit on the roadways without running over any art builds, objects or people
- Vehicle must comply with the same build guidelines as art builds for such things as excessive scripts, glow, particles, etc.
- Car must pass an inspection by a DMV art car inspector and receive an inspection tag (Inspection checks the items listed above)
- The inspected vehicle must remain rezzed and not altered to keep the inspection tag active
- Inspections must be completed before end of build week, 11pm, Tuesday, October 14. No exceptions! Option for late inspection will not be offered this year.
- Re-inspections may be done after event opens subject to inspector availability
*** Please don't wait until the last minute to build and inspect your cars. Late inspections will not be offered after the build deadline. ***
During the event:
- Rangers will inspect cars at their discretion, if issues arise
- Rangers will return cars:
- that are being driven without a valid inspection sticker
- abandoned outside plots
- blocking roadways when parked
- Cars that are part of art builds with their driving disabled do not need inspection tags
More about the inspection:
- Contact a DMV mechanic to get your car inspected
- They will check the car for build guidelines and scripting, and ask some questions
- If all looks good they will:
• offer an auto-park script if you want it (put this in first)
• give you a DMV Inspection Tag to place in the car's Contents - After the car owner places the script inside, the inspector touches the car and completes some dialogs to validate the sticker
- That's it! the car is ready for the event
- Please don't alter any vehicle contents or take it into inventory. Doing so will invalidate the inspection tag and require re-inspection.
** Parking Rules Clarified **
Inspected art cars may be parked temporarily near music events or art plots while the driver is nearby. There is no time limit on parking the car. The car must not be obstructing any roads or be inside another art plot or audience area when parked. Not every plot has an adjacent area suitable for parking, so please be mindful to park in an appropriate place out of the way. Rangers will be checking that there are no parked cars obstructing roads or abandoned. Rangers will generally try to reach the inspected car owner before returning cars unless there is an immediate issue affecting others, or if the car is abandoned without the owner around.
** Scripting Rules Clarified **
Art cars may have other scripts in them, but the number of scripts must not be so high that it impairs the car's ability to perform as a vehicle, make sim crossings, etc., during active sim use. SL servers don't handle vehicles the same way as static objects, and have memory limits on vehicle scripts in order to hand-off during sim crossings.
In particular we have some concerns about cars that use more than 10 single seats or 5 couples seats with avSitter, as we have seen problems at past Octoburns. avSitter works great on art cars with 1 or 2 couples sits; At 10 singles sits, the car is usable but there is noticeable degradation when simulators are active. Cars with 20 sits were unusable during the event with full sims and people due to this issue. Large art cars with more than 10 singles sits should use an alternative sit system that involves fewer scripts. The DMV Art Car Kit has an option for this. Contact the DMV lead if you want help on this.
For camps that already have a really cool large car with tons of avSitter sits, please keep that for your camp as the stay-at-home model, and create a 2nd car with a different sit system just for driving around. If your camp and car fall into this category, please contact the DMV Lead so we can make arrangements for you to have both cars. The stay-at-home art car would be counted toward your plot LI. We want to promote large art car use at Burn2 Octoburn and have some flexibility for the 2-car option.
** Vehicles During Build Weeks **
During build weeks before the event opens, plot owners may drive their own vehicle from the entrance, through the regions to their plot if they wish to have a drive-in experience. We ask that plot owners minimize driving around once they arrive at their plot, as this can distract other builders. If you do drive, do not exceed walking and running speeds. After the event begins, only DMV-inspected and tagged cars may be driven.
** Auto-Park Script for Private Art Cars **
DMV provides an add-on script for inspected art cars to auto-park from anywhere in the 12 regions back to the parking spot at your camp, after a configurable delay. Contact any DMV Mechanic if you would like a copy, or you can get it when you get the inspection.
** Art Car Workshops and Work Party **
DMV provides art car workshops during build weeks. Please see the Burn2 website or contact Cuga Rajal for a schedule.
Sunday, October 12 - the last Sunday before building closes - will be an Art Car Work Party all day long in the DMV sandbox. If you have any final touches you want to add to your car, or want some last-minute help, bring your car by during the work party. There will be people around to help and to do inspections. And there will be cookies!
** Art Car Parade **
Sunday, Oct 19, 12 noon - Art Car Parade at Octoburn!
The first Sunday of Octoburn at noon SLT is the Art Car Parade, open to everyone. If you created your own car for Octoburn you can be at the front of the line! If you don't have your own art car, you can still join the parade as a passenger on one of the large art cars, or use one from the rezzer and join in!
As in previous years there will be an afterparty at a builder's camp. More details will be forthcoming.
** Call for Large Art Cars **
DMV encourages experienced builders to create large art cars for the event! See the DMV Art Car Kit or contact the DMV lead for details. These typically hold 12 or more passengers and create a temporary community. Some large art cars may be garaged in or near the DMV sandbox during the event at the DMV lead's discretion, subject to space and LI available. Large art cars builders do NOT need to give a copy to DMV, but they require a special festival configuration, inspection by the DMV Lead and parking assignment.
Making the car does not guarantee inclusion. Please contact the DMV Lead in advance so they know what you are intending to do, and can plan for how much LI and space it requires.
** Please finish your car, get it inspected and tagged before build closes at 11pm on Tuesday Oct 14!! **
