In Japanese, “Shibari” simply means “to tie”. The contemporary meaning of Shibari describes an ancient Japanese artistic form of rope bondage.
Shibari style rigging creates geometric patterns and shapes with rope that contrast beautifully with the human body’s natural curves. The ropes and their texture provide contrast to smooth skin and curves. In Shibari, the model is the canvas, the rope is the paint and brush, and the rigger is the rope artist.

There are also replicas of handmade collages and paintings throughout the build from our own collection. In this installation “4 Elements” we have conceptualized the four elements of the Universe (Earth, Air, Water, Fire) through the medium of sound and vision. As you walk through the installation, there are many things to touch as well as hear, and in addition, there are some hidden areas which will only be revealed with patience and time. Please take your time to absorb the different areas for the 4 main elements in the center chamber. You can also experience the front and back chambers by taking part in a gong and metal bowl ceremony, or sit comfortably on a meditation cushion and focus on the dream machines (patterned after the original designs of Brion Gysin).

Dadara is an interactive artist from Amsterdam, Holland.
He has created many art projects for Burning Man.
This year, you will experience yet another reality…of Solipmission. Super Suz, the build artist for the rendition, met Dadara while interviewing him for her podcast. She was so inspired that she brought his Solipmission from Black Rock City to BURN2.
FIRST
Three burners walked into the box at the beginning of Burning Man’s week and did not leave it the entire time.
THEN
Visiting participants entered the box and described their own reality of Burning Man for themselves. As they did, the artists living in the box painted what they had not seen before- Burning Man, 2017.
All the time seeing through the mind’s eyes of the visitors, Dadara and two other artists experienced a rich and rewarding burn.
Finally
On the last weekend, the artists entered real reality of Burning Man to watch the sun rise on the playa and see the temple burn.

I went for a long bike ride one day to think about radical ritual and what it meant to me. There are so many rituals we do in our life…and the first one I can remember as a child was brushing my teeth. Every day, once in the morning & once before bed….whether I had a good day or I had a bad day…whether it rained or the sun shone. There is comfort in a ritual like this one, it is predictable, routine, and comfortable. I had a dream where many teeth were escaping from a toothpaste tube. The combination of those thoughts is how I decided what to build for my radical ritual.
