BURN2

Curiouser & Curiouser

October 18-27, 2024

Burn2 Will Soon Echo Black Rock City

It is our tradition in Burn2 to "echo" Black Rock City every year, which includes following Burning Man's announced art theme. In "Curiouser & Curiouser," we embrace the irrational and the absurd, and invite the unknown over for tea.

Encounters with the strange, unusual or absurd can be tranformative. We can reawaken curiosity and creativity, to rediscover the hidden spark within and let it grow. We can create and share stories that bring visitors into the art, into the music - after all, there are no bystanders in the dust...

More "Echo"

Black Rock City (aka BRC) is full of camps! They can feature music, storytelling, poetry reading, food, services (foot baths!) and a richly amazing range of artistic sharing and interesting things to discover. In Burn2 we love to echo this. We're excited about the camps that will spring up on the playa this year! The variety in the ways each year's theme is expressed through the builds is always delightful.

We're looking forward to seeing you back! You can have a stand-alone sound camp or art installation, even a little camp with an infinite supply of...something! Just envision what bit of joy and colour you can bring to a dry lake bed desert environment.

Sound Camps: The WHO::WHAT::WHERE Guide will be back! Our website will feature that again this year, so participants can know what's going on, where, when...and be a part of the spectacle with you!

We're Looking for a Few HUBS...

This year we are again going to try the HUBS concept. After this was first introduced at BRC, we decided to try to echo that in Burn2. The goal of HUBS is to improve sustainability and conserve resources by sharing and contributing to the benefit of the HUBS and the residents of BRC. Creating a HUBS is completely optional. You can still have a stand-alone camp if you wish.

How do we translate that HUBS idea into our virtual environment? We encourage sound camps, art installation camps, and smaller camps to form clusters that share resources like a shared stage, power sources, canteen, art installation as backdrop - we are wonderfully creative at Burn2. We encourage collaboration and communal effort while remaining decommodified.

In HUBS, one example of sharing resources is when sound and art installation camps form clusters and collaborate on a shared schedule for performances or shows. Each HUBS can manage their shared schedules with all kinds of performers on those stages or activities on an art installation. There could be smaller camps grouping together to form smaller HUBS clusters.

To Form a HUBS
  • You need a main camp - it doesn't have to be the largest camp - the plot owner of that camp would be the Mayor, the contact person for the HUBS.
  • You'll want a name for your HUBS. Participating camps would join that HUBS.
  • The Mayor collects the names of the plot owners who will be members of that HUBS and provides that information through a plot owners questionnaire for Placement.
  • All plot owners will each need to purchase their own plot, then submit their questionnaires, indicating they will be in a HUBS and describing what their plot build will be. The plots in a HUBS could be joined if desired, as long as they are adjacent (sharing at least one side).
How Big Can a HUBS Be?

Given that:

  • We don't know how many HUBS/villages we will have;
  • We have finite numbers of each of the four plot sizes; and
  • We have a limit of land space...

We are setting a maximum of 7,168 total square meters for a HUBS. This is less than two 4096 square meter plots. We will do our best to place your HUBS plots together.

If you are going to create a HUBS, this means you have to do a little planning, know who will have a camp in your HUBS, who will be Mayor, and keep within the maximum square meter limit for the HUBS.

The Burn2: Curiouser & Curiouser Plot Sale is now open! Placements will be sent out starting in early to mid-September.
