2017 Burning Man Art Theme: Radical Ritual
This year’s theme is an attempt to reinvent ritual in our post post-modern world. For this purpose, we will disregard assertions of belief and concentrate instead on the immediate experience of play. Beliefs contain, define, and limit meaning. They can reduce truth to a rational commodity. But play can free us to envision truths of which we have no proof or warrant. Such play, as we conceive it, breaks down the distinction that divides belief from make-believe. Wholehearted and creative play induces self-surrender to experience that is beyond the scope of reasoned thought.

As is our annual tradition at BURN2, we mirror the look and feel of Black Rock City, with familiar features as the Man, a Temple, Center Camp, and the typical ordered chaos of art builds, art cars, Lamplighters, Rangers and artists on the playa.
Our event runs October 21-29, 2017, culminating in the virtual Burning of the Man on the 28th and the Temple Burn on the 29th. We follow up with a Skin Burn a week or two later; this is a reprise Burning of the Man in a low-lag environment.
We encourage participation in the event, and remind you that it is our belief and practice that there are no bystanders at BURN2; everyone becomes a participant in one way or another.
