BURN2 is an extension of the Burning Man festival and community into the world of Second Life. It is an officially sanctioned Burning Man Regional, the only virtual world Regional out of more than 100 Regional groups worldwide, and the only Regional to burn the Man!
This unique virtual Regional spreads the culture and Ten Principles of Burning Man year-round in Second Life, culminating in an annual major festival of community, art and fire in the fall - a virtual echo of Burning Man itself.
While the following refers to ‘building’, it also applies to theme camps and any other use of the Playa. A person does not have to be a builder to take part in a BURN2 event, and someone can also join as a novice builder by taking advantage of our building classes that are offered at various times. Please ask about our building and training camps. “There are no bystanders, we are all participants".
It is a fact of life that in any big community there will be some rules to help things run as safely, smoothly, and as fairly as possible for all in the community.
The BURN2 Regional is not just a bunch of individual builders thrown together in a big virtual space. Each builder is part of Burning Man, and is responsible to the community and fellow participants to build in a manner that does not adversely affect others.
We have only a few RULES around playa aesthetics:
All builds should connect to the ground, with no skyboxes or floating platforms.
Plots are in the shape of a circle, 18 meters in diameter. A template is included in your builder's kit.*
Please keep below the build height, which is 18 meters for this event. A height measure is also in your kit.
Stay within your LI limit for your plot - 225LI.
At the end of the event, we practice “Leave No Trace” and pack everything back up. This is the responsibility of the builder, do not leave it for us to return items. The "Leave No Trace" deadline for Fire Moon 2017 is 4th February 2017, no later than 11:00 PM (23.00) SLT.
*If you did not get a builder's kit, contact either Daark Gothly or iSkye Silverweb in world for one.
When You Build (as in any inworld collaborative building project):
- No old Megaprims. Since the maximum size of your plot is 18m in diameter, megaprims or prims later than that size are not needed or allowed.
- Mesh is allowed, but please use it sparingly, and be aware that not everyone uses a viewer which enables them to see Mesh.
- No Temp-on-Rez objects.
- Please respect parcel boundaries and build within your plot. - Objects that overhang or are outside of parcel lines (“MOOP,” or “Matter out of Place”) may be returned to you.
- Please keep texture size as low as possible (512x512 or its equivalent) and reuse textures when possible.
- Do not use any scripts that require interacting with the region server or external servers/databases, such as scanners, visitor logs, etc. and keep script times to .02ms or less, if possible.
- Minimize the use of lag inducing physical objects.
- Make prims phantom wherever you can.
- Use glow sparingly. The effects of glow multiply in an area, so if few sources, a maximum of 0.5, if a lot, a maximum of 0.2.
BURN2 is a virtual continuation of Burning Man, an event that happens yearly in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert on an ancient, dry lake bed. This “playa,” as it is called, is ringed by distant mountains and supports no animal, insect, or plant life. It is very windy, very dusty, very dry, and very inhospitable. Storms can appear suddenly and out of nowhere. EVERYTHING is trucked in or brought in from hundreds--or even thousands--of miles away. And, when the event is over, EVERYTHING is picked up, and the playa is returned to its natural state as if nothing ever happened. Not a single sequin or twist tie remains. HOWEVER...
You will notice while you see there is still playa surface, there are mountains, there are also other features that have been introduced as a part of theme of this event. Lunar-like setting, rings of fire, Oriental structures - these are the sights and flavour of the current Fire Moon event, but we still do as we do at Burning Man. We "truck" everything in and out, we practice radical self-reliance and radical self-expression, along with the other principles of Burning Man. And, always remember, SAFETY THIRD!
We have the following GUIDELINES that respect playa aesthetics:
What is the difference between rules and guidelines? The above rules are limitations to which everyone must adhere. Guidelines, however, are suggestions. They are not rules, but if everyone follows them, then it will help with the look and feel of our event. Remember our builders challenge! We are not gonna lecture you on this... we just ask you to consider playing a role:
-- Not digging up the playa, creating mounds of playa, or otherwise harming it environmentally.
-- All fires are on burn stands, burn barrels, or somehow contained to not leave burn scars.
-- Builds are made of lightweight materials that can be trucked in. Sometimes, they may require many trucks and/or cargo containers, but everything is still trucked in.
-- The Black Rock Desert gets magnificent dust storms, lasting hours, or even sometimes days. Build things that won’t get caught by a windstorm and blown away. Use rebar and rope and tie things down securely.
-- Tents, shade, sail cloths, poles, scaffolding, portapotties, temp sheds, trailers, Quonset huts, geodesic domes, motorhomes, rental trucks (no logos - but you can parody the logos for humor), bikes, or other temporary structures come down quick and leave no trace.
-- The Black Rock Desert is a hostile, barren environment that won’t support grass, lawns, forests, or gardens. Instead, use astroturf, fake potted trees, or other items that are designed to look manufactured, rather than lifelike.
-- If in doubt about anything, ask. BURN2 Coordinators also have texture, building, and other resources available and are there to help.
Please request assistance in BURN2 Access group chat if you have any questions or need further information or clarification. Builders may also use the Community Boards to offer help, seek information, support, or just make new friends. If you wish to know what is the reason for any of the rules or guidelines, we are more than happy to explain.
Applying for a plot signifies your acceptance and commitment to compliance with these guidelines.
Important: BURN2 Staff will remove or ask for the removal of any build, object, or scripted object that does not fit within the very liberal Ethos and Principles of Burning Man.
A LAST NOTE:These guidelines and rules may be updated at any time, so please remember to check the website often, and any notices sent out to the BURN2 Access group.
If you need assistance or clarification, contact Daark Gothly or iSkye Silverweb in world.
